Official: Cadillac Converj Concept Will Make Production

Cadillac has just announced that a production version of the Converj concept is on the way.

General Motors has just announced in an official press release that the Cadillac Converj concept first shown at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show is making its way to production. To be called the ELR, it will be utilizing technology directly from the Chevrolet Volt. While no official performance numbers have been announced, the ELR will "feature an electric propulsion system made up of a T-shaped lithium ion battery, an electric drive unit, and a four-cylinder engine-generator."

And just like the Volt, the ELR will switch to extended-range mode when the battery's energy is low. According to vice president of Cadillac Marketing Don Butler: "The concept generated instant enthusiasm and like other milestone Cadillac models...the ELR will offer something not otherwise present...in a luxury coupe."

In keeping with current Cadillac naming tradition, the brand selected the ELR designation in order to indicate the car's electric propulsion technology. GM vice president, Global Design Ed Welburn said that "there's no mistaking it for anything but a Cadillac, an aggressive forward-leaning profile and proportion showcases a uniquely shaped, modern vision of a personal luxury 2+2." No release date has been announced, but Cadillac will also be revealing another new concept today at a special event prior to the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.
