Coming To America: Ford Fiesta 1.0L Three-Cylinder EcoBoost Engine

Ford unleashes a 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost engine for the Fiesta. It's the smallest engine Ford has ever built.

Ford has confirmed that their new 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder engine will be coming to the US. The latest edition to the EcoBoost family will be the smallest engine Ford has ever built. The 1.0-liter three-cylinder features direct injection and Ti-VCT and will be mated to either a six-speed manual or dual-clutch automatic six-speed transmission. The 1.0-liter engine is said to produce an output in the neighborhood of 120 horses. The new engine has the same displacement as a cruiser motorcycle.

This marks the first time Ford has ever built a vehicle with less than four cylinders. Ford also plans to launch five EV's in the US market by 2012 and 2013 in Europe. They've also been working very hard to expand its lineup of hybrids and plug-in hybrids. In addition, Ford has confirmed they are developing in-house an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission. Further technical and application details of the new Ford Fiesta 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine will be released at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
