Mercedes-AMG has just announced they'll be supplying the official F1 Safety Car and Medical Car for the Formula 1 World Championship in Melbourne, Australia. The big event will be taking place this weekend, March 25th - 27th. According to the official company press release: "The task of the SLS AMG Gullwing and the new C 63 AMG Estate is to ensure maximum safety in dangerous racing situations or following an accident."
The C 63 AMG Estate is going into its fourth season, although this year will feature the redesigned model that includes the AMG Speedshift MCT 7-Speed transmission. And while the SLS AMG sure is fast, it's obviously not competing in the race. Instead, in its role as the official safety car, it will be sent onto the track by Race Control wherever an accident or bad weather conditions endanger the safety of the drivers competing. It will be driven by German racing driver Bernd Maylander and will remain in the pit lane while the race is taking place (unless duty calls).
