Tokyo 2011: Subaru BRZ and BRZ GT300 Racer

The Subaru BRZ has its official premiere at the Tokyo Motor Show; fans are still waiting for the much-desired BRZ STI.

Want to make your own Subaru BRZ? Here's how: buy a Toyota GT 86 or the upcoming Scion FR-S. Then simply swap the badges and front and rear bumpers with the BRZ's and Voila! You'll save yourself a trip to another dealership. Despite some early rumors that Subaru's version of the all-new rear-wheel drive lightweight sport coupe would be more powerful than its siblings, it turns out that it's 100 percent identical (save for the badging).

Powered by a horizontally opposed 2.0-liter boxer engine featuring Toyota's direct injection and port technology, it produces 197hp and 151lb-ft of torque. This is exactly the same as that from the Toyota/Scion. So for now we'll simply have to wait for the upcoming BRZ STI in order to see that power increase. However, Subaru has also just unveiled this image of the BRZ GT300 race car. Developed specifically for Japan's SuperGT racing series, the GT300 has the typical track-ready body work such as a widened track with pumped guards, a huge rear spoiler, and a vented hood. To top it off, it's been lowered and rides on a set of 18-inch racing wheels.

No technical specs have been revealed yet, but we can guarantee that output will be well above 200hp. So let's hope this is a good sign of things to come from what's essentially the ideal 21st century lightweight affordable sports coupe.
