By the end of next year an all-electric SLS AMG will be hitting the streets.
By midway through next year, orders will be taken of the first all-electric AMG vehicle, which is set to be ready by the end of 2012 or early 2013.
Performance cars were always going to get the electric treatment at some point or another and Mercedes' in-house tuning division have made their mark with the SLS AMG E-Cell. We first caught wind of this about a year ago and it debuted in Detroit back in January, and now it seems Mercedes are on target with their first electric AMG.
According to Ola Kallenius, Chairman of the Board of Management at Mercedes-Benz AMG, development of the all-electric AWD supercar is well underway although official specs and range have yet to be finalized. Despite the lithium-ion battery packs' additional weight in the torque tube tunnel, AMG are confident the performance of the E Cell will be exceptional as torque output will be independently controlled to each wheel via four electric motors. In the future, certain AMG models will benefit from electric drivetrains and a Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS), and also utilize alternative powertrains in delivering supreme performance.
